Paying Attention to Hunger and Fullness Stops Overeating

Did you know that feelings of hunger and fullness are sharper in children than in adults? That’s because they are less influenced by habit and environmental factors, so they actually listen to their bodies. Eating when you are hungry, and stopping when you are almost full, may be the secret to getting a handle on mindless eating and overeating.
 
  • Next time you reach for a snack or start a meal, ask yourself if you are hungry or just want to eat. Wait to eat until you feel physically hungry.
  • When eating, stop two or three times during the meal or snack to ask yourself if you are still hungry or if you are starting to feel satisfied.
  • Eating slowly will help your brain catch up to feelings of being satisfied/full happening in your digestive tract.
  • Stop eating when you are about an 8 on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being very full.
