What do I have in common with actress Elle Fanning and journalist Jessica Wapner? A passion for calling out dieting scams and the risks of buying supplements and other substances in a misguided effort to meet impossible and irrelevant beauty standards.
I'm so honored to work with them on their new podcast: One Click. Go straight to my episode (A Thin Line) with the link on the left, or listen to the whole season here! One click on the internet can change a life forever. |
ABC PERTH Radio Interview
"Fad Diets: From the Bizarre to the Downright Dangerous"
Host: Gillian O'Shaughnessy on WA Afternoons
Guest: Dr. Melissa Wdowik, Registered Dietitian, Director of the Kendall-Reagan Nutrition Center, and Assistant Professor of Food Science and Nutrition at Colorado State University
"Many of us have tried a fad diet at some point in a desperate bid to drop a few kilos before a special occasion or to fit into those jeans that have been stashed away in the wardrobe for far too long. The cabbage soup diet, grapefruit juice diet and the baby food diet are a couple that spring to mind. Social media has played a role in circulating fad diets today but they are not a new phenomenon and if you look back through history the obsession with weight loss was clearly evident.
Melissa Wdowik is an Associate Professor of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Colorado State University and has been looking at some fad diets from days gone by."

"The Long, Strange History of Dieting Fads"
“Of all the parasites that affect humanity I do not know of, nor can I imagine, any more distressing than that of Obesity.”
So started William Banting‘s “Letter on Corpulence,” likely the first diet book ever published. Banting, an overweight undertaker, published the book in 1864 to espouse his success after replacing an excessive intake of bread, sugar and potatoes with mostly meat, fish and vegetables. Since then, fad diets have appeared in many forms. To what length will people go to achieve their desired figure? Read more about fad diets at The Washington Post or The Conversation:
